Scholarships

Should you not be able to sponsor your studies yourself, there are some scholarships available. Please note that competition is very fierce and that you need to fulfill many application requirements without a guarantee for a scholarship.
Application for the Belgian scholarships: VLIR-UOS scholarship,  the IMAGENT tuition fee waiver, the Flanders Knowledge Area MasterMind scholarships and the UGent TopUp grant (see below) can be done directly with our online application form, which you also use to apply for pre-academic admission to the International MSc in Agro- and Environmental Nematology.
We strongly advise you to also try to apply for other sponsorships, because it opens up your possibilities. There is no need to contact us asking for other scholarship opportunities, as we publish all possibilities we are aware of on our website. Please also check with the education ministries of your country and scholarshipsportal.com.

If you are a student at one of our partner universities (see below), then it is also possible to come as an exchange student  to follow part of our master programme, meaning that you follow selected courses for a period of minimum 3 months to maximum 1 year. Please note that this does not result in a degree from Ghent University. There are several funding opportunities. Please contact us if you are interested:

IMAGENT Tuition fee waiver

The International Master of Science in Agro- and Environmental Nematology and VLIR-UOS will annually grant some tuition fee waivers for top students from developing countries who were not succesful in obtaining a scholarship.

It comprises:

  • the tuition fee to Ghent University: 906,10 € (2017-2018)
  • summer course travel fee of 1200 €
  • registration fee for the BePrep Summer Course (about 200€)

Applications can be done through the online application form.

VLIR-UOS scholarships

Please check the VLIR-UOS website for more details about eligibility criteria. The main eligibility criteria are:

  • Applicants can be no older than 35 years at the time of application
  • Applicants need to be a national AND resident of one of the 32 scholarship countries at the time of application.

Application for the scholarship is through the Nematology online application form for pre-academic admission, where you can indicate if you wish to apply for the scholarship, deadline 3 January 20xx. Please make sure you fill in all the questions.

Selection will be done in two phases:

  • a first selection round, where candidates chosen by the Nematology Educational Committee can continue to apply for the scholarship. Announcement is the latest beginning February 20xx.
  • second selection round: this is the final selection round where the VLIR-UOS and the Directorate General for Development Cooperation, decide which candidates will be granted a scholarship. Announcement the latest in May 20xx.

UGent TopUp grants for candidates from developing countries

Ghent University provides Top-up Grants to candidates from all countries on the OESO-DAC list, who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University.

Each year, a minimum of 10 scholarships can be awarded.

The scholarship fee consists of:

  • Allowance of €650 per month.
  • All-in insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)

Airline ticket and visa costs are not included in the grant.

Application for the scholarship is through the Nematology online application form for pre-academic admission, where you can indicate if you wish to apply for the scholarship, deadline 3 January 20xx.

Flanders Knowledge Area Master Mind-scholarships

The Flanders Knowledge Area offers up to 45 scholarships for full degree students for minimum 1 year to  outstanding Master students from all countries. More information can be found on this website: http://www.studyinflanders.be/en/scholarship-programmes/master-mind-scholarships/.

The Government of Flanders provides up to 45 Master Mind Scholarships to The application is managed by our faculty. You yourself cannot apply for this scholarship. Application for the scholarship is through the Nematology online application form for pre-academic admission, where you can indicate if you wish to apply for the scholarship, deadline 3 January 20xx. Out of the admitted students who apply for this grant, the Nematology Educational Committee will select the most rewarding students and propose these to the Flemish Government, the funding partner. The students concerned will then be informed that they have been shortlisted by e-mail and by publication on our website.

Scholarships after enrolment

Once you are enrolled at Ghent University, several opportunities become available to you to apply for specific scholarships to support financially your internship, thesis (master dissertation) research, courses within your master programme that you follow at a university abroad, ...

You can only apply for these scholarships on condition that your are enrolled in a Master programme at our University, so not when you are still in the application process or before courses have started. Once you are enrolled, you will be provided with detailed information on the various possibilities and the application procedure.

Erasmus Plus
Once you are registered at Ghent University, and your programme includes a semester (of courses, thesis research or an internship) at another institute in Europe with which Ghent University has an agreement, you can apply for funding (provided by Europe) to help you out a minimum of 3 months and maximum 12 months. Allowance covers roughly cost of living. More details on Minerva. Deadline: February of the preceding academic year.

Generic Scholarships
For course work, dissertation research or internship. Available to all students going to non-European destinations. Supports you for a maximum of 5 months, and offers between 650-850EUR per month. More details on Minerva. Deadline: February of the preceding academic year.

Bilateral Agreements (Ghent University)
For course work, dissertation research or internship at non-European destinations. Supports you for a maximum of 12 months, and offers 1000EUR travel allowance.

ASEM DUO (Flanders Knowledge Area)
Scholarships under the ASEM-DUO-Belgium / Flanders Fellowship Program. These scholarships can fund an exchange of one semester between Ghent and China, India, South Korea or Vietnam. Ideal for thesis research in those countries. Allowances of 650EUR per month + travel allowance, duration 4 months. More details on Minerva. Deadline: February of the preceding academic year.

TRANSITION (Flanders Knowledge Area)
Scholarships to promote exchanges of students between Belgium/Flanders and 4 countries in transition, i.e. Brazil, Morocco, South Africa and Turkey. Deadline: February of the academic year preceeding the academic year of mobility. Duration between 1-12 months. Allowances of 650EUR per month + travel allowance. For course work, internship or master dissertation. Details on Minerva. Deadline: February.

Erasmus Plus traineeship

Students who have succesfully completed their master degree can obtain funding for a traineeship after graduation. The funding is provided by Europe. Duration varies between 2 and 12 months. The internship takes place at European institutions, companies and organisations. You need to register before graduation.
